TIRANA, the capital of Albania, is located almost at the venter of the country. It is a relatively new city, created in 1614 by Sulejman Bargjini, local feudal of that time. It began to assume its development as a city as early back as the 18th century. In 1920, Lushnja Congress decreed it capital of the country.
Tirana lies at the foot of Dajti Mountain 110 meters above the sea level. Greenness escorted with sunny days prevails on it. The most beautiful seasons are spring and autumn. During these seasons, there become rather attractive the parks, in particular the Grand Park, an entertainment environment that encircles the artificial lake, the Martyr’s Cemeteries of the Nation, the Botanic Garden, the Zoo, the sport complex and the swimming pools are to be found there.
Tirana is the biggest political, economic, educational, scientific and cultural center of the country. At the center of the city, on Skanderbeg Square, there is the Old Mosque of Et’hem Bey built in 1789 as well the Clock Tower, 35m high, built in 1830. The Palace of Culture and the Opera and Ballet Theater and the national Library rise beside them. The building of the National Historic Museum, which through the materials and documents exhibited in various pavilions makes a synthesis of the history of the Albanian people from ancient times to present days, rises next to them on this square. In addition to this, the tourist may visit other objects such as the Exhibition of Folk Culture, the Archaeological Museum, the Gallery of Fine Arts, the Museum of Natural Sciences, etc. Quite amusing will be also the excursion to Dajti Mountain, from where one’s eyes can see interesting views, such as the Petrela and Preza Castles.
