KRUJA, a city nested on a step mountain side, stands high as a balcony over Adriatic shores. The background of this city is closely linked with our National Hero Gjergj Kastrioti- Skanderbeg. Making use of Kruja as his main stronghold from 1444 and on, e.i. for 25 years in succession, Skanderbeg, defended the country’s freedom and independence and stopped the onward march of the Ottomans who were threatening the entire European civilization.
A narrow path, formerly used as characteristic medieval bazaar, leads you to the Citadel of Kruja. The citadel that stands on a predominant position on a rocky massif 650 m above sea-level has been built by the local population after the invasions by Goths. It is on a strategic position offering views to the visitors.
As you enter inside the walls of the Citadel, what strikes you eyes in the Museum devotes to Gjergji Kastrioti Skanderbeg, built in 1982. The numerous exhibits and documents put on display there familiarize you with the struggles fought by the Albanian people under the leadership of Skanderbeg.
